As NFLbets is already set for betting on the early slot on Sunday as well as for Monday Night Football, we figured we’d scan the second half of games for anything wager-worthy – and hoo boy, did we find a fun one, namely
Seattle Seahawks +5 at Los Angeles Chargers, over/under 51 points
Week 2 debacle against the 49ers aside, the Seahawks have been an absolute delight to bet on in 2022, either winning ATS/SU or hitting the over in all other games. Judging by the all recent smack-talking flak that Richard Sherman is publicly heaping on Russell Wilson, Pete Carroll is seeing a raise in his stock historically and in the present, doing more with less, finally freed of a prost-prime franchise quarterback.
(Gee, maybe there’s a reason the three longest-term head coaches in the NFL are Carroll, Bill Belichick and Mike Tomlin, all three spat out the other side of franchise QB departure and doing remarkably well with their teams near ground zero this season.)
As for the Chargers, NFLbets has a theory: These are the last days of Brandon Staley and, as we’ve already seen with Matt Rhule this season, a bottoming-out precedes the ending. Now we’re not saying that Staley’s out during the bye week after this game – no doubt he’ll last out 2022, probably with another couple late-season playoff-eliminating losses.
The truth is the Chargers haven’t been exactly destroyed all comers during Staley’s run as head coach, going 13-10 SU/12-11 ATS in all games. This season, the Chargers are exceeding this norm with a 4-2 SU/ATS record thus far, though coaching blunders nearly cost Staley’s team both of the previous two games.
All things equal, then, we’ll bet on the team trending up with a bullet and we’ll say they cover in exciting shootout fashion: Take the Seattle Seahawks +5 and take the over on an O/U of 51 points.
